Ryan Johnson MC/MPA 2012

Mid-Career Master in Public Administration

The one-year Mid-Career Master in Public Administration (MC/MPA) is an intensive 32-credit program that enhances the knowledge and skills of established, high-performing professionals who are looking to move up in their public service careers or transition from the private sector to leadership positions in the public or nonprofit sectors. As part of the program, students also enroll in the five-week Mid-Career Summer Program designed exclusively for mid-career professionals to build and renew important skills before beginning classes in the fall.

MC/MPA students, in consultation with their Harvard Kennedy School advisors and mentors, design their own study plans, giving them the freedom to pursue their emerging professional and intellectual interests and develop new skills. Their only degree program requirement is to take at least one course (4 credits) from a preapproved list in each of the following three areas:

  • Economics and Quantitative Analysis
  • Management and Leadership
  • Political Thought and Institutions

Some of Harvard Kennedy School’s most accomplished students are those in the MC/MPA Program. They come to HKS from across the United States and around the world, from a range of professional backgrounds and personal experiences, and are recognized for their valuable, individual contributions to the school’s intellectual community.
